For You (1978)
Prince (1979)
Dirty Mind (1980) Highlighted by “When You Were Mine,” this mostly titillating affair is a touch too simple in places. B+
Controversy (1981) B
1999 (1982) If I have any complaint, it’s that it’s way too long. There’s no song whose groove I don’t enjoy during that time, but sometimes I feel like I want to get off the train but have to wait ’til the last stop. If that sounds like a compliment, maybe it is. A-
Purple Rain (1984) It’s fabulous, yes, but kind of skimpy beyond the singles. B+
Around the World in a Day (1985) C+
Parade (1986)
Sign o’ the Times (1987) A more subtly rewarding Prince album in many ways; the title cut and “U Got the Look” you already know, but how about “The Ballad of Dorothy Parker,” too? A
Lovesexy (1988)
Batman (1989)
Graffiti Bridge (1990)
Diamonds and Pearls (1991) Somewhat flat dry run for its successor that has its moments, but is also too noisily produced to enjoy in more than short bursts. B-
[Love Symbol] (1992) These are among his best melodies, and even the raps have power and import. It starts running out of gas around the final lap—could have been his best vinyl, I think. A-
Come (1994)
The Black Album (1994)
The Gold Experience (1995)
Chaos and Disorder (1996)
Emancipation (1996)
Crystal Ball (1998)
The Truth (1998)
The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale (1999)
Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic (1999)
The Rainbow Children (2001)
One Nite Alone… (2002)
Xpectation (2003)
N·E·W·S (2003)
Musicology (2004)
The Chocolate Invasion (2004) I think Prince really enjoyed being able to easily create and release so much music in the digital age.
The Slaughterhouse (2004)
3121 (2006) B
Planet Earth (2007)
Lotusflow3r (2009)
MPLSound (2009)
20Ten (2010)
Plectrumelectrum (2014)
Art Official Age (2014)
Hit n Run Phase One (2015) B
Hit n Run Phase Two (2015)
